Carmelgiri College, Adimali, run by the Carmelgiri Education Trust, Adimali, Idukki, came into existence as a parallel College named StellamarisCollege- a parallel college for women only on 1st June 1988, in the educationally backward village of Mannankandam, Adimali. When she completed her 25thyear she was raised in to the status of a Self- financing Arts & Science College on 22nd June 2013 with NOC from the Government of Keralaby G.O.(Ms.) No: 313/2013/H. Edn. Dated 19.06.2013-Thiruvandapuram, and Affiliation from M.G. University, Kottayam by  U.O.No.3462/3/13/AcAVII Dated P.D Hills 22.06.2013 with the name StellaMaris College for Women, Adimali. Initially four streams were sanctioned, namely B.Com Model 1 (Computer Application), BA English Model 3 (Literature, Communication and Journalism), BSc Psychology and BSc Computer Science. The college presented its first batch of 91 students for the 1stSemester University Examinations in October, 2013.
The college was sanctioned three additional streams andreceived N.O.C from The Govt of Kerala byG.O.(Ms.)409/2014/H.EdnDated02.07.2014,Thiruvandapuram, and Affiliation from M.G. University, Kottayam,U.O.No.3522/3/14/AcAVII DatedP.D Hills.08.07.2014. The courses are M.Com Finance.B.Com Model 1(Finance and Taxation) and B.A. EnglishLanguageand literature Model l.

Due to the request from several parents to give a chance of admission to boys in this college,as there is only one co-educational college in the nearby locality,The Executive Committee of C.M.C. Carmelgiri Province Trust Adimali (The Educational Agency managing the College), has requested the University that the status of the college be changed from Women’s College to that of a co-educational institution and that the name of the College be changed from Stella Maris College for Women to  “Carmelgiri College”. Sanction has been accorded by the Vice Chancellor of M.G. University, Kottayam by U.O.No.3492/3/16/AcAVII Dated P D Hills 27.06.2016-to change the name and status of the College as per request.
